Ruishton Village Day Flower Show 20th July 2013

Probably the most keenly contested class of the Show is the Rhubarb class and despite the dry weather there were a record number of entries with the Claydon Challenge Trophy going to Viv Streeter who demonstrated versatility by also taking the cup for the Chocolate and Sweet Potato cake.

The winner of the previous week’s Scarecrow competition, “Old Macdonald” complete with his farm animals, was brought down to the show by the Greenslade family, to help shade the many “Potato Crop in a bucket” entries from the sun.

The hot weather didn’t deter the talented village cooks from spending time in their kitchens to produce a huge variety of cakes, jams and savoury pastries which gave the judges a difficult task in deciding the winners. Mavis Skeggs displayed her culinary talents by taking the R & J Cave Cup as the overall points winner with the Walker Cup going to Hazel Greenslade as section runner up. While Mavis Skeggs also took the Victoria Sandwich cup in the ladies class, Malik El Abbar was a first time winner of the Victoria Sponge in the men and boys class. Keith Adams took the class cup for Scones and daughter Emily won the Henlade Cup for Decorated Cup Cakes in the Children’s section. While Paula Adams and George Adams also had another family double in the handicrafts section winning respectively the cup for the hand knitted article and the shield for the Wooden Spoon Person. The overall points winner in the handicraft sectionand awarded the Arthur Jelks Tray as the overall points was Mavis Skeggs.

This year’s Children’s Section was a riot of colour with paintings and drawings lining all the available wall space in the meeting room and together with many fine examples of handwriting and handicrafts made for a fine display of talent. Special mention was made of the computer generated poster class that displayed the use of graphic art at a high level, the class cup being awarded to Hannah Vickery.AlsoCup winners were Lola Reed, the David Berry Cup for the bookmark class and Nathan Whitman the Growtage Challenge Cup for the Lego class

The cups were presented by Mark Harrison on behalf of the Schedule sponsors, Spirit Health Club Taunton. Flower Show Chairman, Mike Marshall, said that the high quality of this year’s entries reflects the strength of this annual event which goes from success to success.

In the Wine and Drinks section entries of home-made Fruit Liqueurs continue to increase in variety making the judging particularly testing and also enjoyable! Paul Baker was doubly successful taking the ‘Wine of the Show’ cup and the Breeze Cup as the overall points winner of the section.

Film Titles provided the theme for this year’s Floral Art and Linda Claydon took the Maudie Hayward Trophy as the points winner in the section along with the Herbert Blaney Cup for the miniature floral arrangement that celebrated the film “The Lord of the Rings”.
